Vastu is the ancient science of direction that combines all elements of nature and balances them to enhance health, wealth, prosperity and happiness in an enlightened and positive environment.Vastu Shastra tries to remove all ill effects through structural alterations and/or use of vastu products like pyramids etc.
Formed from two words Vasa (Living) + Sthuala (Place of Living) =Vastu
Vastu shastra can be broadly defined as system to be adopted for the place of living.

Vastu shastra is an ancient science which finds its origin in Sthapatya Veda which is actually a part of Atharva Veda (One of the four Vedas).

Vastushastra comprises of philosophy and theory of Architectural works to construct any building and as well as living style of people. Vastushastra is based on various natural energies like

Solar Energy
Lunar Energy
Earth Energy
Electric Energy
Magnetic Energy
Thermal Energy
Wind Energy
Light Energy
Cosmic Energy

The five basic elements on nature- namely Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space along with the various forces of nature influence mankind and nature.
Ancient sages of India laid down several principles for constructing buildings by taking advantage of the nature.

The name “Vastu purusha” is closely connected with the Vastu shastra and every now and then we use this name in all the shantikarmas (rituals) performed in Karamkand (prayers). So we should know who this Vastu purusha is.

There is a mythology concerning the birth of Vastu Purusha according to which Andhakasura a very powerful giant (Rakshasa) had terrorized the Devtas. Finally Lord Shiva fought a battle with Andhakasura and killed him. During this battle Lord Shiva perspired heavily. Out of the sweat of Lord Shiva this Vastu purush came into form, immediately after his birth he started devouring anything and everything that came in

his way due to which Devtas were very much afraid and prayed to Brahma for help. Braham advised Devtas to over power this demon and press him down (face down) into the earth and hold him there. Accordingly 45 devtas hold this vastu purush putting his face down and lying on earth from North East to South West.

After the above incident Vastupurush prayed to Braham dev for mercy in return Lord Braham blessed him and proclaimed that the construction on the earth will only be successful when the Vastu Purusha will be worshipped and respected in return the vastupurusha also promised to take care of the inmates of the house or the occupants of the land.
Vastu Purusha is a man lying with his back upside and bent and his head pointing North and East respectively. The direction allotted to the land and their utility represented by the body parts of the demon. The elbows point towards North-West and South East direction respectively. His knees are touching the elbows and are pointing the directions of the elbows only. His feet and soles are joined and are pointing jointly towards South-West direction. Naval part of the demon is imagined to be coinciding with the centre point of the land and is called Brahma Sthan the most auspicious space.

Vastu is science of direction hence the directions are very important in all Vedic sciences.
Proper orientation of any building is important to ensure perseverance of positive energy for this proper knowledge of all the eight directions is necessary. Sun arises in the East and sets in the West and when we face the East, North lies to one’s South to one’s right. As is obvious the corner where two directions meet is more significant as forces emanating from two directions combine here. There are eight directions, North, Northeast, East, East south, South, Southwest, West, West north. Every direction has its own significance and has its own construction.

Each of the eight directions of the universe is presided over by a separate deity and these deities have their own influence on the prospects of the home/building.
